Tierschutz erLeben (Welfare Xperience) is a digital learning platform designed to teach the fundamentals of animal welfare and herd management in cattle and sheep. The project combines scientific rigor with game-based elements and offers multiple forms of user interaction. A classic learning environment provides theoretical content, while interactive comics (Comic Automatons) allow users to make decisions and observe their consequences within a narrative simulation. Built-in tasks assess knowledge in context, and a comic-style sandbox enables users to create their own educational scenarios. This approach makes learning visual, engaging, and safe — allowing users to understand the consequences of management decisions without harming real animals. The development followed Design-Based Research and Design Science Research methodologies, involving students and educators throughout the process.
