Multifunctional sponge holder
Industrial design | Package design
A kitchen sponge holder reimagined through the lens of classical heritage and postmodern critique. Inspired by the expressive masks of ancient Greek theatre, this product merges artistic symbolism with functional design.
The sponge holder pays homage to centuries of cultural evolution—drawing from the aesthetics of ancient Greek and Roman visual language—to bring emotive form and sculptural presence into an everyday household object. The mask, once used to convey complex characters and emotions on stage, now becomes a functional artifact that bridges ancient cultural identity with contemporary domestic space.
Beyond its visual distinctiveness, the project engages in a subtle critique of consumer culture, addressing the tension between aesthetic value and utility in a disposable age. By elevating a common kitchen item into a conceptual design object, it challenges conventional expectations of utility products.
The sponge holder is housed in a translucent Priplack plastic box, which conceals the product’s form behind a silhouetted halftone effect, suggesting elitism, ambiguity, and layered interpretation. Minimalist typography frames the box, aligning with the concept’s ascetic and intellectual tone.
Inside: The mask itself, a concept booklet and a structured black cardboard stand, echoing architectural motifs.
